His Rise to Fame

• Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 on the island of Corsica.
• He went to a military academy in Franceand trained to become an officer in the army.
• At the age of 24 he was promoted to Brigadier General.

What he did that was different

• Napoleon was given command of the French army in Italy.
• He was very organised and could move his troops quickly around the battlefield so the French would always seem to outnumber the enemy.
• He won many important battles.
• He returned to Paris and declared himself First Consul (dictator of France).

How it all ended

• In 1812 he invaded Russia but many men within his army died of starvation on the way and he had to return to France.
• The rest of Europe joined together to defeat Napoleon and he was exiled (sent away) to the island of Elba.
• He escaped and took charge again for the Hundred Days.
• On June 18^th1815 he led his army to the famous battle of Waterloo where he was finally defeated.
• He was exiled to Saint Helena where he died six years later.
