Mammoth Maths Day
Last week we held a Mammoth Maths Day involving 207 pupils.
Organised by Maths co-ordinator Mrs Linda Wilson children of all ages participated in series of challenging yet fun tasks with a mathematical twist throughout the morning.

Mrs Wilson explained the idea for the day – she said :-
“The concept was to use maths to engage every child at the school, this was a competition where children competed against others within their own age group by taking part in a number of challenges.”
“All of the classes were split into small teams of around four pupils and then in turn tackled a series of problems that were designed to encourage problem-solving and team work through mathematical thinking.”
Judging by the children’s faces they were having a great time, there were a range of activities that including large games of connect four through to more traditional equations with pupils being asked to crack tough formulas.
Mrs Wilson added;
“Many of the children will not see today as a long maths lesson, it will feel more like a giant play session.”
“It is very important that the children learn through having fun and also through play, and this event has achieved that.”
“This is the first time the school has held a Mammoth Maths event and given the success of this morning, we will look to repeat it each year.”
Swinemoor Primary School run regular competitions in all subjects taught at the school with winners being declared.
The first winners of the Mammoth Maths day to be announced were a team called The Fish made up of Keaton Buck, Millie Spivey, Madison Woodiwiss and Kyle Bemrose.
However, it seems that all the children were the real winners at Swinemoor Primary School as they enjoyed fun packed morning while learning some useful mathematical skills.
